Tyrannosaurus rex
"Rex Mundi"
Tyrannosaurus rex is by far the publics favourite dinosaur. Over the last decade it has attracted a great deal of attention via movies and scientific discoveries. Its speed, lifestyle, mating rituals and same species rivalry have been the subject of intense scrutiny. There have even been attempts to dethrone the Tyrant King by presenting"bigger and meaner carnivores", yet still the public kneels to their favorite dinosaur. Weather one believes it was a scavenger, a killer or an opportunistic hunter, this dinosaur has been proven to be a solid link between science and the general public. The intrique of trying to understand a real life monster that lived sixty- five million years ago like any other animal today, is very much alive and well.
This piece depicts "Rex Mundi" (King of the World in Latin) rearing up to make herself look bigger to a rival rex. Already she has enormous scars, old and new, and would rather scare off the enemy than engage in yet another fight. Her massive weight puts cracks in the cooled lava flow beneath her feet.
